Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Saturday visited the Tokyo Electron Factory in Sendai, where they toured the Training Room and Production Innovation Lab, and interacted with senior company officials.

Sharing details of the visit on X, PM Modi underlined the growing importance of semiconductors in India-Japan relations.

“PM Ishiba and I visited the Tokyo Electron Factory. The semiconductor sector is a key area for India-Japan cooperation. In recent years, India has made significant strides in this field, with many young people actively contributing. We look forward to continuing this momentum,” he wrote.

PM Modi received a warm welcome upon his arrival in Sendai, as locals and members of the Indian community gathered to greet him with chants of “Welcome to Japan, Modi San!”

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the two leaders’ joint travel on the Shinkansen bullet train as a “unique gesture symbolising the warmth of the India-Japan friendship.”

The visit comes as India and Japan strengthen their cooperation in economic security, with a special focus on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and critical minerals.

Near Sendai, a major semiconductor plant is under development in collaboration with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), SBI Holdings, and Japanese partners under the joint venture Japan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (JSMC). The project is seen as one of Japan’s largest initiatives to revive its domestic chip industry.

For India, such collaborations offer access to cutting-edge technology, strengthen supply chain resilience, and create new investment opportunities, reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
